Every October, millions of people across the nation volunteer their time during Make A Difference Day to make their communities better places to live. This week, 10 projects and three cities will be honored with Make A Difference Awards, and several national service participants – including two AmeriCorps members – will be recognized.

The event is sponsored by USA Weekend magazine and its 800 carrier newspapers. Each of the winners will receive a $10,000 donation to a charity of their choice and were recognized in the April 19-21 issue of USA Weekend.

Two AmeriCorps members were selected for their projects:

• Christina Escobar, an AmeriCorps member serving with the Red Cross in Ellensburg, WA, was recognized for developing Operation Lorax, which enlisted community members to plant 1,000 Ponderosa pine seedlings to help restore part of forest destroyed by a fire that burned 23,000 acres. Members of the Washington Conservation Corps helped project participants, half of whom were children, as they hiked through mud and ash to do the planting.
• Shaquawana Wester, an AmeriCorps member who serves with the Cookeville Housing Authority's Teens Need Training program in Cookeville, TN, noticed that many of the kids she worked with wore little more than a light jacket in the winter. Memories of standing in line at a coat drive led her to create one in the area that collected 1,000 winter coats. After volunteers washed and repaired the garments, 200 coats were given away and the 800 remaining were donated to a rescue mission and a mobile clothing unit.

Two of the cities with mayors that participated in the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service will also be receiving Make A Difference Day Awards.

• Mayor Richard Berry of Albuquerque, NM, is being recognized for a project that used 41 volunteers to scrub graffiti off boulders, plant shrubs to fight erosion, and clean up trash at Piedra Lisa Canyon. The project was led the city's Open Space Division and the non-profit Nicodemus Wilderness Project.
• Mayor Don Patterson of Kettering, Ohio, kicked off a Cities of Service initiative to revitalize one neighborhood every year as 200 people joined a cleanup project in the Richman Heights community. The city has participated in Make A Difference Day for 19 years.

Additionally, the Rochester, NY, FIRST robotics competition, a Corporation for National and Community Service grantee, was recognized for combining their competition with a charity drive. During an event in October, the teen inventors also competed in the Make A Difference Day Mega Drive that collected 468 food items and $112 for a food bank; 1,052 children's books for inner-city pediatric offices; 3,600 pounds of electronic equipment for recycling; and 25 units of blood with the help of the American Red Cross.

I am no stranger to the great goals and aspirations of Campus Compact. Years ago when Campus Compact got started, I had the opportunity to work with the leadership as the program was developing. While I was the state director for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) office in Pennsylvania, I worked closely with the Pennsylvania Campus Compact VISTA project, and I was able to watch as the Maryland Campus Compact was launched and grew to become the Maryland-DC Campus Compact.
 

When AmeriCorps NCCC member Melissa Ettman was assigned to lead a Sacramento, CA-based team to help with the Hurricane Sandy cleanup in New York and New Jersey, she was familiar with many of the areas affected by the storm. In fact, her 87-year-old grandmother on Long Island was affected by the hurricane and had to live without electricity for a week.
 

As Hurricane Sandy efforts transition from emergency response to long-term recovery, AmeriCorps members are providing vital leadership in communities up and down the East Coast.
 

Many of our AmeriCorps members have made cross-country treks to help with the Hurricane Sandy recovery and cleanup. Now one group from the Washington Conservation Corps has had its transition from working on trail projects to helping at a Brooklyn emergency shelter chronicled in The New York Times.
 

Recently discharged veterans shouldn’t have to struggle to find work when they return home from service, but they often do. AmeriCorps VISTA Heather Hays is helping vets make the most of a program that lets them serve their country in a new way while placing them on a pathway to permanent employment.
 

Utilizing the energy and enthusiasm of recent college grads from partner universities to serve as full-time advisers in underserved schools, the National College Advising Corps works to improve the prospects of economically disadvantaged students for post-secondary success.
 

I am thrilled to announce that the Social Innovation Fund (SIF) has selected four outstanding new grantees. These grantees will expand the impact of nonprofit programs with evidence of strong results by implementing exciting programs that will transform lives and communities.
 

Travis is a single father of two from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since 2008, Travis had bounced between part-time and temporary jobs. His wages had peaked at around $10 per hour, though he needed at least $12-$14 an hour to support his family. With limited interviewing and workforce experience, he didn't think he would ever find full-time work – let alone have a career.
 

The Social Innovation Fund is excited to announce the applicants to the 2012 grant competition. We received 31 applications by the due date of March 27, of which 25 were compliant and moved on to the full competition.
 

The Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO), a New York City-based Social Innovation Fund (SIF) grant recipient, recently won Harvard University's noteworthy Kennedy School of Government Innovations in American Government Award for its powerful approach to fighting poverty in New York and across the country.

February 10, we announced the 2012 Social Innovation Fund Grants Competition and we encourage all qualified grantmakers to consider applying. Applications will be due by Tuesday, March 27, at 5:00 pm Eastern Time.
 

While Juliana Ko was serving with Teach for America on the outskirts of a Navajo Nation Reservation, she tragically lost one of her students to suicide and knew that she had to do something for her adopted community.
 

Many years ago, I stepped off a plane from Iraq and onto the tarmac at Pope Airfield in Fort Bragg, NC. The scene was filled with open arms, cheers, the sound of muffled grunts of joy as weeping kids jumped into the arms of their parents, and spouses' soft cries of love and longing. The sounds of reunions were deafening as they bounced off the high walls of the hangar -- it was a sound that I welcomed, and remember to this day.
 

Last week the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) convened more than 200 leaders in the disability and service communities at the 2011 Symposium on Service and Inclusion. Our goal: to discuss strategies to recruit, engage, and support more people with disabilities in national service.
 

Thanksgiving is a time to come together with family and friends to feast in good company. It is the one day a year reserved for expressing gratitude – for family and friends, health and careers, homes and means. But many Americans will not share in such plentiful abundance.
 

Last fall, about 360,000 youth, educators, and community partners began a year-long campaign to demonstrate the potential of education powered by service. Through the Learn and Serve Challenge, they pledged to engage in service-learning activities to help more young people understand how their education is relevant in the real world.
