The London 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremonies begin tonight, and we're feeling the Olympic spirit. With that in mind, we asked visitors to the AmeriCorps Facebook page which events would be included in an AmeriCorps Summer Games. As you might imagine, we received some mighty interesting responses.
Requires strength, agility, and, uh, the ability to throw stuff. Keep an eye on our AmeriCorps team – they have a ton of experience. Last year AmeriCorps NCCC constructed, renovated, or weatherized 1,000 homes, and AmeriCorps members in Joplin, MO, completed more than 2,200 homeowner service requests after the town was struck by a devastating tornado. They have hammers, and they're not afraid to use them.
The scoring for this dance competition is subjective and the Russian judge always comes in low, but we still plan to shake it like a Polaroid picture. The City Year AmeriCorps members have all the right moves as they work with at-risk students to improve academic achievement with tested dropout intervention efforts.
Here's an event for players who don't mind getting their hands dirty. Our NCCC team planted 438,000 trees and native plants in 2011, but still maintained their amateur status. We really dig the way these folks approach their work. (Sorry, we couldn't resist.)
Some people claim they can make a dollar out of 15 cents; making a little go a long way is a hallmark of AmeriCorps. In addition to strengthening the impact of the nonprofit groups they serve, they leveraged their contributions in 2011 with $486 million in additional private contributions.
Determination and tenacity in the face of adversity is a trait of any good Olympian. AmeriCorps VISTA members are dedicated to their cause to fight poverty as they develop programs that are the best fit for the low-income communities they serve. This means that sometimes they have to knock on a lot of doors before the right one opens. We hope they ice down their knuckles at the end of the day.
