Target Team Members Design 16 School Libraries and Help Thousands of Students Nationwide

Target is proud to be a part of United We Serve. In conjunction with Education Week, Target Property Development team members are putting pencil to paper this week and beginning the design phase for its School Library Makeover program. The national program unites the company’s commitment to both education and volunteerism and pro bono service, bringing new school libraries to 16 schools and thousands of in-need students across the country.

“A simple sketch is what we as designers take for granted. It’s easy for us to envision space in our heads and for us to communicate our vision to other people through a sketch – and that’s a pretty powerful visual tool,” said Reggie Reyes, Senior Design Lead in Target Store Design.

“The library makeover program has provided an opportunity for the design team to showcase their talents while doing their day-to-day work of designing stores throughout the country. In conjunction with the Target Construction, Target Commercial Interiors, local general contractors and The Heart of America Foundation, those simple sketches will start taking shape in the next couple of months for grand unveilings throughout the country this fall. Seeing all those happy faces on the event day makes it all worthwhile!”

To honor the new National Day of Service and Remembrance, Target’s School Library Makeover program will launch in September when more than 200 Target volunteers and our non-profit partner, The Heart of America Foundation, will join more than 1,000 students, community members, school faculty and staff for the unveiling of the redesigned library at P.S. 76, The Bennington School in the Bronx, NY. The library will receive 2,000 new books, technology, shelving, paint, furnishings, carpeting and more as part of the makeover. In addition, every student will receive seven books to add to their personal at-home reading collection.

Continuing in the spirit of service, hundreds of thousands of books will be donated and tens of thousands of Target volunteers will be lending a hand during back-to-school time in September and October when the additional libraries are unveiled.

Target encourages all Americans to answer the President’s call to service by putting their skills and energy into action in their communities. To learn more about Target’s community outreach efforts, visit Target.com/community.
