Wordless Wednesday: 5750 Dallas

5,750 is the official number of homeless men, women and children in Dallas. This year the buildingcommunityWORKSHOP honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, through an installation project advocating for a solution to the challenges our homeless citizens face every day. A series of small installations were assembled at a number of locations across the city. These aimed at calling attention to homelessness in Dallas and specifically at the divide between those who have and those who live without.

At each location a family of painted wooden silhouettes hold spray-painted cardboard signs highlighting the challenges of the homeless. These signs are paired with words from Reverend King and a sign that gives the web address: 5750dallas.org. On this microsite visitors can LEARN more about homelessness in Dallas and the proven solutions for helping their neighbors.

The buildingcommunityWORKSHOP is a Dallas based nonprofit community design center seeking to improve the livability and viability of communities through the practice of thoughtful design and making.  We enrich the lives of citizens by bringing design thinking to areas of our city where resources are most scarce.  To do so, the bcWORKSHOP recognizes that it must first understand the social, economic, and environmental issues facing a community before beginning work.

Wordless Wednesday is a weekly feature on Serve.Gov that shines the spotlight on spectacular projects and organizations by telling their story through photos alone. You can also read last week's entry.
