“I don’t need ruby slippers, when I have running shoes” ...Girls on the Run participant
Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia is a part of an international organization dedicated to educating and preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living through running. Girls on the Run offers a curriculum-based youth development program for girls in grades 3-8. The curriculum is delivered in 10-week sessions by trained volunteer coaches and culminates in a celebratory 5K running event.
The coaches guide and mentor the girls using activities like running, playing games, and discussing topics such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to walk or run in a 5K (3.1 mile) running event and celebration.
The girls run their way to better health, but the impact doesn’t stop there. Listen to this Girls on the Run participant’s story:
A feeling of dread came over me as I stared hopelessly at the algebraic equations on my math test. Math definitely wasn't my best subject, and let's just say that this test wasn't going too well, and I was only on the first problem! Then, I thought, "If I can run eight laps at Girls on the Run, I can do this." Girls on the Run has helped me become much more confident and fearless. I have started to believe in myself more and I get more confident every time I run a lap at practice. I now believe I can do anything I want to do, even run a 5K.
