Get Involved in the Summer Food Service Program
The Summer
Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded effort
administered by states that reimburses organizations for meals served to
children during the summer.
Schools, churches, recreation centers, playgrounds, parks, and camps can
serve meals in neighborhoods with high percentages of low-income
families.
There are several ways that you can get involved in the SFSP. Here are some suggestions:
- Sponsor a Summer Food Service Program site. Public or private schools; local, municipal, county, tribal, or state government; private non-profits; and universities and colleges are examples of local organizations that often serve as Summer Food Service Program sponsors.
- Open a feeding site. Community buildings or places of faith make great feeding sites. Feeding sites are organized by the sponsors and are the physical locations where food is served.
- Volunteer. Volunteers help with basics like transporting food, setting up or cleaning up a site—they also plan and do educational or recreational activities with the children. Contact your State agency to find a SFSP Sponsor or feeding site to volunteer with in your area.
Ending Hunger
Nearly half of Ohio’s school children qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, and many of these children do not have access to adequate nutrition during the summer months. This lack of access to adequate nutrition has been linked to poorer academic performance, which can easily perpetuate the vicious cycle of poverty.

Ending Hunger
It seems improbable in a country where 90 million of its citizens are battling obesity that 49 million are also having food security issues, however, that’s the reality in the United States today. And more than 16 million of our most-vulnerable residents -- America’s children --are paying the price.
