FoodCorps Is One Of Several Efforts To Give Children Healthy Foods
Washington Post, June 19, 2012

FoodCorps, of which I am co-founder, is a nonprofit that addresses childhood obesity and food insecurity by working with schools to create a healthier food environment. Our service members plant school gardens, bring healthy food into the cafeteria and teach students about nutrition in the garden and lunchroom. We send these leaders into communities with limited resources to teach healthy eating — as a member of the AmeriCorps Service Network, we are sort of a Peace Corps for school food. Read more >>

Secretary's Mom Inspirers National Service at Chicago Conference

Leave No Young Adult Behind

This echoes the experience we have had at Public Allies, where we have found incredible leadership talent in this population. Bizunesh Scott was an 18-year-old single mom starting community college when she enrolled in our AmeriCorps program. Today, she is not only a successful lawyer, but recently served as Special Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel at the White House. Tomás Garrett-Rosas was a high school dropout and gang member who got his GED before participating in our AmeriCorps program.
