Secure the Call and Detroit Police band together for Anti-Stalking Kit

by Kirsten N.

Little did Whole Foods shoppers know that when they donated their unwanted cell phones at Secure the Call’s collection barrels in Ann Arbor and West Bloomfield, MI that not only were they ‘greening’ their community, but they were also helping to keep the Detroit area safe.

Thanks to the donated cell phones from shoppers at Whole Foods, Secure the Call (STC) and the Detroit Police are now including an emergency-only 911 phone with every one of their “Stalking Kits”. The kit includes an STC 911 cell phone, flashlight, personal alarm, micro-cassette recorder, whistle, log sheet and information regarding stalking.

According to Sergeant Deanna Wilson of the Detroit Police Domestic Violence Unit, “The Detroit Police Department is committed to assisting families by providing service and support to the women that have been exposed to domestic violence. This increases the opportunity for these women and youth to lead healthy, non-violent and safe lives as adults. Including a 911 emergency-only cell phone is a great help.”

Secure the Call, a national 501 (c)(3) non-profit that collects and distributes free emergency-only cell phones, is proud to help the community and to be a part of President Obama's call to service. According to president and founder Mike Morgan, “Detroit’s efforts are exactly why I started Secure the Call. We are grateful to all of the volunteers across the country that support STC and help to make the program a success.”

Secure the Call is always looking for stores, businesses, community groups willing to collect old cell phones. To donate your cell phone free of charge or to host a cell phone collection drive, please visit: http://www.securethecall.org.
