Profiles in Service

by Merici Vinton

On April 21, 2009, President Obama signed the Serve America Act into law – the most sweeping expansion of national service in a generation. It has been an incredible year for national service – thousands more Americans are volunteering, AmeriCorps applications have tripled over the last year and the service field is experiencing a wave of new innovation and collaboration.

To mark the one year anniversary, we are going to spotlight the stories of everyday service heroes who are transforming lives and local communities across the country. Each day – leading up to the one-year anniversary – we’ll post a new “Profiles in Service” that represents some of the best and most impactful service work happening in the field. From an AmeriCorps member in Alaska who built a recycling program for a remote island to a Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) member who innovated Meals on Wheels to expand services to more seniors at no cost to volunteers – these are just a glimpse of the incredible stories of service that are made possible because of our national service programs.

“Profiles in Service” is an opportunity to learn more about the great work of the Corporation’s programs – AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America – and how that are working to tackle our nation’s tough problems from homelessness, to the skyrocketing dropout rate and poverty.

The economic downturn is causing hardship for millions of Americans – and government can’t solve these problems alone. It will take all of us, working together. We believe that service is part of the solution – and that’s where you come in. Go to and find out how to make an impact in your community. And then share your story with us – and maybe your work will be featured on our blog.
