Kevin B. is an adult learner. Pat B. is a literacy tutor. Here is our story.
“I am Kevin B. I am a troubled reader and I have decided to get help. I have been working with Pat. She has been helping me a lot. I am 23 years old and it is time for me to get my life together. So I am. One step at a time.”
I can’t imagine life without reading or books – To Kill A Mockingbird, The Kite Runner, Gone With The Wind. Books educate, inspire and introduce you to amazing people and places. How frustrating life must be without the ability to read – menus, cookbooks, maps, newspapers, phone books; going grocery shopping; filling out a job application. So I decided to try and help.
I wanted to help one person at a time and try and make a difference. I attended a class at Operation Read, which teaches volunteers how to tutor adults and improve their literacy skills. Kevin and I have only been working together for eight weeks but we’ve already learned a lot from one another. Kevin is intelligent, has a great sense of humor and is also a bit of a philosopher.
The first time we met, Kevin told me that throughout his life he has built a wall around himself in order to hide his difficulty. He’s limited in finding jobs and that creates more frustration and even anger. Kevin is determined to go forward. I’ve certainly learned there’s a lot more to a person than having a degree. Together, he and I will tear down that invisible wall.
