Full Circle

by Sam McKenzie

On Thursday November 18th, the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) campus in the Atlantic Region held its 16th graduation ceremony in Brooklyn Park, MD. Two-hundred and sixteen national service members were honored for 10 months of full time service to the country.

More than 150 guests attended the ceremony, including families, friends, alumni and NCCC project sponsors. The auditorium was filled with energy, cheers, and excitement.

The keynote address by Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, was the highlight of the event. Quoting National NCCC Director Mikel Herrington, Patrick talked about how the NCCC uniform must be ‘earned.’

The ceremony was not without tears. Team leader Jennifer Spiegel recalls feeling sad because the graduation means her time with her team is over. Other members also cried and embraced as the ceremony came to a close. While the graduation does signal the completion of a term of service, it is also a new beginning. For members, now alumni, it is only the first step in a lifetime of public service.
